As we continue to celebrate Latin American independence this week, and get closer to this weekend’s festivities at @kennettcreamery - we wanted to take a moment to recognize the amazing artists of Latin American decent that were a part of the art at Artelo. Each of these artists worked expressions of their own identities, roots and the rich cultures there-within into the beautiful pieces that now proudly adorn our rooms. 🇵🇷 Jose “BUSTA” Bustamante currently resides in New Jersey, but is heavily influenced by his roots in Chia, Colombia. Inspired by his own culture, Urban Wilderness celebrates Colombia’s rich biodiversity by incorporating native plants into the design, creating a room filled with vibrant foliage. While staying true to his artistic origins, BUSTA infuses graffiti elements into the design, adding an edgy and dynamic vibe to the space. Each of these artists worked expressions of their own identities, roots and the rich cultures there-within into the beautiful pieces that now proudly adorn our rooms. 🇵🇷 Betsy Casañas is renowned for her vibrant use of pattern and color, as well as her dignified portrayal of marginalized communities. Finding Home celebrates the cultural richness of immigrant communities by merging elements from traditional Mexican Otomi textiles and Caribbean floral motifs. The design showcases vividly painted, highly graphic images of animals and flowers in whimsical patterns, serving as focal points in the room. In Weightless Lines, dark structured lines symbolize the ingrained pathways of perception, culture, and language, while bursts of abstract freedom represent the transformative power of releasing narratives and expanding consciousness. Kala Hagopian founded Hagopian Arts, an independent female-owned and operated public art initiative based out of West Philadelphia, back in 2015. Her work specializes in luminous, meticulously rendered murals inspired by nature. Wild Medicine, Artelo is part of their Eco Mural Project: a series of ecologically themed public art pieces with goals to beautify blank walls and educate the public about environmental degradation. This mural ties to their group of Wild Medicine murals, exploring cultural heritage through the study of medicinal plants. Chenlin Cai divideshis time between Beijing and Philadelphia. His artwork is infused with the contrast between these two cultures and draws both from his classical training and his more innovative and contemporary paint techniques. Freiman Stoltzfus is a lifelong lover of nature, spending his formative years working and playing in the fields and orchards of Lancaster County. Travel has greatly expanded his artistic vision. During a 2023 visit to Japan, the contemplation of Asian artists and their long, fruitful relationship with the natural world, opened new poetic pathways to him. In A Poem For The Seasons, Freiman evokes both energy and restfulness. This Thursday, July 11th celebrates Kennett Square’s rich arts community with two events you can’t miss! Join the Kennett Library for an art exhibit featuring several of this year’s Kennett Arts Festival Artists, 5-7pm in their Art Gallery. Then join Artelo for their grand opening from 6-9pm. Tour the uniquely designed rooms, each featuring a distinctive piece of art, and receive a limited edition print. Robert has worked as a full time as an artist for about 30 years. Though based in Kennett Square, he has exhibited coast to coast with galleries and can be found in Museum, Corporate, and Private Collections around the world. His work often contains humor and references to art history which made for a perfect encounter with Artelo. You now find yourself in somewhat of a sacrilegious experience with contemporary art, labeled with dime store post-it notes instead of the exquisite museum placards. With utmost reverence he has created variances of famous works to adorn your room in order to fashion a substitute museum encounter, bringing the art world to you. No longer hanging on esteemed institutional walls, these works now hang in Artelo, here in Kennett Square. Bob (as he is known to us around town) found it funny and ironic to think of people googling these yellow post-it notes to explore multi-million dollar pieces of art. Often his work includes “trompe l’oeil” (trick of the eye) illusions and as a nod to himself he painted the brushes and tape spool used to create some of the works along with his own personal post-it note. Christian Kanienberg, operating under the name WISH for over two decades, is a proud multidisciplinary artist. Inspired by the native Lenape tribe, Of Eleven incorporates elements such as Lenape-specific beadwork, arrows, clay vessels, turkey feathers, mushrooms, and flowering plants, forming an altar-like homage to both nature and the Indigenous people. The three beaded portions of the antlers symbolize the first three clans, while the title reflects the cultural significance of the number eleven. Mz. Icar, which is derived from the backwards spelling of racIzM, is an anonymous art collective composed primarily of Black Women. Their work, informed by collective experiences and a fascination with color, texture, and proportions, explores play, beauty, and radical liberation. This mural features an abstract composition of the text “Keep Going,” embodying the movement and energy of Harriet Tubman and her renowned motto.
